Calbright College is an all-online unaccredited statewide community college with a $137 million budget and only 523 students. Its $20 million budget for the current year works out to $38,000 per student. The college’s first president resigned after less than a year and the school has had difficulty bringing on full-time faculty members.
With California facing an unprecedented budget crisis, we can no longer afford this failed experiment.
A plan worked out by state legislators would eliminate Calbright’s funding and use the surplus to save other programs.
Defunding Calbright will bring more than $100 million into the 115-campus community college system and $12 million back into the LACCD. These funds can be better used to protect faculty health care and serve our students.
“Calbright is stealing money from our community colleges,” California Federation of Teachers President Jeff Freitas said. “Both the state assembly and the senate have heard what’s going on. We’re still in this fight. We’re working with the Assembly to try to get it done.”
