Guild’s Mantra for Reopening -- “Safety First”!
Posted On: Jul 206, 2020

As we consider ways to allow our students to complete classes that were interrupted in the spring, there’s nothing more important than the safety of faculty, staff, and students.

The Guild has met with District representatives to begin determining the criteria for a safe completion of hands-on, hard-to-convert classes. By completing these courses, students will fulfill their goals of transfer or obtaining a degree or certificate. In discussions, we have emphasized the need for enhanced PPE, criteria for exemptions, approval by instructors, and no penalty for instructors who still don’t feel safe returning to campus.

As we use the voice of our union to ensure safety, we also use our advocacy to influence outcomes in the District and the state.

One way to continue our fight for equity and justice is to ensure our students have the best Board of Trustee members advocating for their interests. (See article in this issue for more information on our slate of endorsed candidates – Andra Hoffman, David Vela, Mike Fong, Nichelle Henderson.) We are relying on you to promote these candidates and to support Proposition 15 (Schools and Communities First) and Proposition 16 (to undo Prop 209) to family, friends, and everyone who relies on your recommendations.
